In honor of the month of love, all February long we’ll be running our #ProtectTheirHearts campaign, debunking myths and diving into the reality of the incredibly serious and potentially fatal disease of HEARTWORM, a mosquito-transmitted progressive illness that has caused immense harm to populations of dogs, cats, and other mammals across the U.S. and other parts of the world. As a dog rescue that focuses on the stray population of a Caribbean island rife with weather conditions that favor mosquitoes, The Sato Project has been waging a battle against heartworm for as long as it has been in existence, and unfortunately that battle isn’t showing signs of letting up anytime soon. Luckily, there is much that can be done to protect your pet against heartworm disease; and as we in the rescue community know, prevention constitutes the very best form of disease treatment.

And our heartworm campaign doesn’t end with dispensing education! Did you know just one complete course of treatment for a single heartworm positive dog, including medication and boarding, costs us $1,000? To kick off 2024 we’ll be raising funds to strengthen our expansive vetting protocol, build up our beautiful Sanctuary where our dogs go to be socialized and heal from treatments, organize mass spay/neuter events, and fly healthy dogs off the island for adoption into forever homes. Our rescue is entirely backed by the donations of our generous supporters, and not one of our satos - heartworm positive or otherwise - could complete their rescue journey without it.
