The stray dog overpopulation crisis on Puerto Rico is a man-made emergency - and we cannot rescue our way out of it. Dwindling adoptions and lack of access to affordable spay/neuter/vaccine services has resulted in an explosion of the number of stray dogs, which we now estimate has climbed to over 600,000 roaming the streets and beaches of an island roughly the size of the state of Connecticut. But in true TSP style, we have come out swinging with a pivoted, one-two punch approach: recognizing that mass spay/neuter/vaccine clinics that treat not only local owned dogs, but also offer TNR services, are the most impactful ways to diminish the number of satos who must suffer. It attacks the crux of the problem—the birth of unwanted litters and spread of disease. While we will never waver in our mission to connect satos with loving families, we must go forward with our expanded definition of responsible rescue. In 2023, The BISSELL Pet Foundation and Cathy Bissell donated crucial medical supplies and surgical equipment to help us launch #OperationSato, where we successfully examined, spayed, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped over 1,200 dogs; that equipment has remained on-island and has already been put to use in other #OperationSato events. This was only possible via the relentless efforts of our team, volunteers, sponsors, and the greater #SatoStrong community.

However, the fight is far from over. The issue of overpopulation is worsening and we can't do this on love and determination alone; we urgently need your support to continue our work. Today we launch MISSION POSSIBLE 18, an immediate example of our one-two punch approach to rescue: funding an upcoming Freedom Flight for dozens of satos off the island, and our next #OperationSato event coming up the first week of May. So we are reaching out to you with a heartfelt request:

In order to fund Mission Possible 18, we are entering a crucial MATCHING PERIOD through May 5th, where your generous donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar - IF you help us meet our goal of $60k. We sadly turn away hundreds of families at each #OperationSato event who desperately need these services, and we'd love to give them that opportunity to access this program completely free of charge, as well as find forever homes for several hundred lucky satos a year.
